What is the quality of life in Canada in 2023?

New economic and social studies give an overview of how good life is in Canada.

People often move to Canada to find a better way of life. Canada's high living standards have given it a good name around the world, but how are they doing right now?

Several recent studies from Statistics Canada talk about things like work, immigrants, the price of food, and child care. Together, they give a picture of the social and economic conditions in Canada, which affect the quality of life there.

In short, more people are working in high-skilled jobs, more foreigners are moving out of big cities, and childcare is getting cheaper. People in Canada find ways to save money on groceries, even though food prices are high.

What is the quality of life in Canada in 2023

Since the pandemic, Canada has added more jobs in management, the arts, and science.

Some Canadian businesses may have moved faster toward digitalization because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Before the coronavirus caused many people to work from home, Canadian businesses were already making more use of technology.

Since COVID-19 began, Canada has seen a rise in the number of jobs for management, professional, and expert positions. One report from Statistics Canada said that between 2019 and 2022, the number of these jobs went up by almost 4%. That may not seem like much, but if you look at the growth of these jobs over the last 35 years, that's almost a third of the total rise.

Even though there were more management, professional, and expert jobs, there were fewer service jobs and fewer jobs in production, craft, repair, and operation. Younger workers, aged 25 to 34, saw the rise in tech jobs and the fall in service jobs more than older workers, aged 45 to 54. This could mean that more young people are taking on tech roles than service roles.

Why do more newcomers choose to live outside of big cities?

Well, the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) does help, but it's important to remember that people with permanent resident status can live and work anywhere in Canada. Still, a lot of people choose to live in small towns and country places instead of in the big cities. What gives?

Outside of the biggest cities, the cost of living is much lower. If you look at rent prices across Canada, you'll see that even in medium-sized towns, there are many more cheap choices.

Not only that, but none of Canada's biggest towns are in the top 50 happy places to live. A new study by Point2Homes shows that the happiest people live in mid-sized towns outside of big cities. In this poll, happiness was measured by things like income, place, health and well-being, and the environment.

All of this being said, the PNP has made it possible for foreigners to move to places other than the more well-known ones.

Canada has made the PNP, an immigration program that is run by the provinces and regions, bigger over the past 20 years. Quebec and Nunavut are the only provinces and regions that do not have their own PNPs.

According to the Immigration Levels Plan, the PNP is the economic immigration program that will bring in the most new people each year over the next three years. Economic immigration is when someone wants to move to Canada because of their work experience, not because of family ties or because they want to be a refugee.

By having a say in who comes to the country to work, the provinces and regions can meet the needs of their local labor markets. Statistics show that newcomers who come to Canada through a PNP do well on the job market because of this.

Between 1998 and 2009, when the PNP started, 35 percent of all economic immigrants to Canada came through it. The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW) is the opposite of this. For this government visa program, you don't need to have worked in Canada or have a job offer. In 2000, the FSW made up about 79% of economic newcomers. By 2019, however, that number had dropped to 30%.

A recent StatsCan study shows that the PNP has helped spread out new economic immigrants even more across the country. For example, the number of new economic immigrants who want to live in Ontario has gone down from 61% in 2000 to 42% in 2019. Even so, Ontario is still the most popular state for people who want to move there.

The study also shows that more province nominees worked and went to school in Canada before they applied for permanent residence. There was a noticeable rise in the number of nominees with more schooling, better official language skills, and who were between the ages of 20 and 29.

FSW refugees were also more likely to want to work in professional jobs, while provincial nominees were more likely to want to work in technical jobs. Because of this, there were almost as many new economic immigrants with skilled jobs (which require college degrees) as there were with professional jobs (which require university degrees) in 2019. In 2005, when economic immigration to Canada was mostly made up of workers, this is a big change.

Canadians are changing shops to deal with the high cost of food.

Canada's food prices are going up. StatsCan says that because of this, Canadian families are buying less and changing how they shop. About 71 percent of people in Canada buy or use fewer food store things than they did in the past.

Canadians have been going to different shops to deal with inflation. People are moving toward shops that sell a variety of goods, like warehouse stores and supercenters, which may have better deals on food.

Also, a lot of Canadians are switching to cheaper names or things instead of more expensive ones. Others have looked for cheap grocery stores.

Less money is being spent on babysitting by Canadians.

Parents who can get their kids into child care that is paid for by the government save a lot of money.

The current federal government promised to bring controlled childcare costs down to $10 per day by 2026. As of the end of 2022, the government website says that fees have been cut by 50 percent. So, parents are saving thousands of dollars each year, from $2,000 to $14,300, based on the state or region.

Parents in early 2022 paid an average of $7,790 per year for full-time childcare before the government set up a national scheme.

In Canada, it's hard to find cheap childcare because there aren't enough spots in places that are paid for by the government. That means that a lot of parents have to pay a lot more for child care.

The Canadian government is also trying to make sure that there are 250,000 more places for children to go to day care by March 2026.

Canada is known around the world for its high quality of life.

It's not just a rumor that people have a good life in Canada. In the most recent version of the OECD's Better Life Index, Canada did better than average in a number of areas, including life happiness. Compared to other countries, Canada also does well in terms of income, work, education, health, the environment, and social ties.
